Summer Vibes, Hangover Free

Summer is in full swing and with it comes the heat, the crowds, and the parties. We tend to slide a bit off track during this season and break from our routines, mine is certainly later nights, the World Cup didn´t help that though. But while we are on the subject Congratulations Spain.. absolutely well deserved Champions! Now back on the subject in mind… Summer Vibes et al… when it comes to drinking perhaps for some, the Summer season is a time of year when one can easily overdo it. SOS well we did the groundwork for you and are here to the rescue.

Early this month, Sober Socials had the honour of hosting our first breakfast meet-up here in San Pedro Alcantara with the incredible Janey Lee Grace.
For those of you who might not know Janey, Janey is one of the leading advocates of AFL and the founder of the Sober Club. Janey has lived a rich and fulfilling life in the showbiz world. Backing singer for Wham and following that co-host to the legendary BBC2 radio show Steve Wright in the afternoon. Janey was trailblazer for wellbeing long before the term was even coined. Yet, as she admits, it was only once she reassessed her relationship with alcohol that she truly felt she could step into a life she loves.

The theme for our event was Boss your Summer without the Booze. The temptation is real. Summer is a season crammed with holidays, BBQs, sunshine, and good times. For many of us, those good times naturally lean towards a glass of something chilled, sparkling, and refreshing. The question is: does it have to be alcoholic? Yet with the general vibe leaning that way, how do you stay on track and navigate the season without the hangover?

Janey shared with us tips and a 4 point Intention Framework using the WOOP method: What, Outcome, Objections, Plan.

WHAT: What is your wish? Not drinking alcohol at the Gala/Party/BBQ tonight
OUTCOME: What would it look like? Wake up tomorrow feeling fresh and fully present having memories of a good night with no shame or regret.
OBJECTIONS: What’s getting in your way? Pressure to drink from others in the group.
PLAN: What can you do about it? Have an answer ready as to why you´re not drinking and check ahead to the venue as to what n/a drinks will be served and plan what you will drink. (or take your own N/A alternative)

Intention is powerful because it acts as the invisible architect of your actions, focus, and results. Make your intention specific and emotionally charged.
For example:
“I’m not going to drink booze tonight”
becomes
“I’m going to wake up tomorrow feeling fresh and energized so I can make the most of my day and be fully present.”

Why this works:

  • Intention focuses scattered energy
  • It shapes motivation and persistence
  • It converts abstract desire into a directing force that reprograms your mind, behaviour, and environment over time.

Give the WOOP a try, thinking about the big picture with intention really helps. Stay true to yourself and watch everything else fall into place. And by the way you can use the WOOP method with just about any situation that needs some thoughtful navigation to ensure you reach your best outcome.

We are really grateful to Janey for this incredible workshop.
