Sober Summer Secrets: How to Enjoy Beach Clubs & Terrace Nights Without a Hangover

August in Spain is pure magic – long, sun-drenched afternoons that bleed into balmy terrace evenings, the hum of chiringuitos by the shore and late-night dinners, maybe even dancing with friends. But if you’re navigating summer sober or simply sober-curious, it can also come with a quiet layer of social anxiety.

How do you handle the constant round-buying? What do you say when someone passes you a menu dominated by sangria and cold beer? And most importantly, how do you stay fully part of the fun without feeling like you’re missing out?

Choosing to skip the alcohol doesn’t mean benching yourself for the rest of summer. With a simple mindset shift and a few practical strategies (and a little inspiration from our own Sober Socials community), you can trade the late-night haze for vibrant, memorable, and hangover-free summer nights.

Upgrade Your Ordering Game

The days of being stuck with sugary soft drinks or plain tap water are long gone. Most venues on the coast are now better equipped for sophisticated non-alcoholic options if you know how to ask – and Spain’s 0,0 scene has never been better.

The Elevated Tonic: Ask for a premium tonic water. If you are lucky it will also be served in a balloon glass over plenty of ice, who knows possibly even with a slice of grapefruit and a sprig of slapped rosemary or fresh mint. It looks and feels like a high-end gin tonic.

The Spanish AF Staple: Spain does cerveza 0,0 exceptionally well. Almost every beach club and bar serves ice-cold zero-alcohol beers on draft or in bottles – perfect for keeping that relaxed terrace ritual alive.

Agua con Gas + Citrus: Sparkling water with fresh squeezed lime, lemon, or a splash of cranberry juice. It’s crisp, endlessly hydrating in the August heat, and keeps your hands occupied.

Custom Mocktails: Don’t be afraid to ask the bartender to craft something custom: “¿Me puedes hacer algo sin alcohol, fresco y no muy dulce?” (Can you make me something alcohol-free, fresh, and not too sweet?) Many places have alcohol free options from Nojito´s to Shirley Temples.

Community Favorites: What Sober Socials Is Drinking This Summer

We asked our Sober Socials community what’s actually on their table this August, and the answers were too good not to share. Consider this your go-to order list for any terrace, chiringuito, or beach club menu:

  • Non-alcoholic red wine with a splash of Coca-Cola – a zero-proof twist on the classic Spanish calimocho, deep, fruity, and refreshingly familiar for anyone who grew up on it. Have you tried it?
  • Tinto de verano (0,0 version) – all the light, fizzy, fruit-forward charm of the summer classic, it is readily available pre-made with alcohol-free red wine and lemon soda from the supermarket or in some bars/restaurants. Order it “tinto de verano sin alcohol” and enjoy!
  • Virgin piña colada – pineapple, coconut cream, and ice blended until slushy. Zero alcohol, maximum beach-club energy and available in many places.
  • Schweppes Pomelo – bittersweet, grown-up, and sophisticated straight out of the bottle. No mixing required, which makes it a brilliant “no fuss” order when you just want something in hand.
  • Zero-alcohol gin and tonic – made with an alcohol-free gin alternative, tonic, and if your lucky your garnish of choice (grapefruit, cucumber, or just lemon). It’s proof that the ritual of a “proper” G&T doesn’t need the alcohol to feel special. I (Em) like the Tanqueray and Gordons 0.0 Gin more than Seedlip, for example and you can even get them in Mercadona or Carrefour.
  • Kombucha – available in many places and a favourite of Lou´s and also super good for you!

Ordering one of these isn’t a consolation prize – it’s a genuinely great drink that happens to keep your head clear.

Master the Low-Key “No”

When drinks are flowing, people often ask what you’re drinking out of curiosity, not judgment. You never owe anyone a lengthy explanation or a deep dive into your personal choices. Keep your answer brief, confident and lighthearted:

  • “I’m sticking to cold tonic today – it’s too hot for alcohol!”
  • “I’ve got an early morning planned tomorrow and want a clear head.”
  • “Just fancying something fresh and booze-free tonight – have you tried the tinto de verano sin alcohol? It’s so good, I can´t tell the difference.”

Notice how none of these open the floor for debate. When you state your choice casually – and maybe even recommend your drink – people move on just as quickly, and sometimes they order one too.

Flip the Script: From FOMO to JOMO

It’s easy to feel a temporary ping of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) when everyone around you raises a glass. When that happens, gently shift your attention to JOMO (the Joy Of Missing Out).

What are you gaining by staying clear-headed?

  • You experience every conversation, laughter and ocean breeze in full definition.
  • You drive home safely, calmly, and on your own schedule.
  • I (Em) had an amazing night out last weekend at Dreambeach with David Guetta – out til 4am dancing non-stop – all just having drunk water, 1 coke and a coffee (caffeinated for a change to keep me awake!) Did the trick and was fully present for it all.
  • You wake up at 8:00 AM hydrated, clear-minded, and ready for a quiet morning walk or a sunrise sea swim while the rest of the world is sleeping off a migraine (ok, maybe I didn´t get up at 8am after a 4am finish).

The best part of an alcohol-free summer evening isn’t just the night itself – it’s winning back your next day (or days sometimes if you get particularly bad midlife hangovers!)

Have an Exit Strategy

One of the great secrets of non-drinking is knowing when the night has reached its high point.

There’s a sweet spot during summer gatherings where the laughter is peak, the music is great, and everyone is connected. After a certain hour, conversations often start repeating and the energy shifts. Give yourself full permission to leave when you feel ready. Leaving on a high note leaves you feeling energized rather than exhausted.

Summer Is Built for Genuine Connection

Being sober or sober-curious isn’t about shrinking your social life – it’s about expanding it. It’s about remembering every punchline, feeling present in the warm night air, and soaking up summer in its purest form.
