The Dry January Challenge is the perfect opportunity to press pause on drinking alcohol and give yourself a refreshing reset while allowing time to reflect on your drinking patterns.  Of course this can be testing especially as you are coming straight out the most festive period of the year and wobbles can be expected. However panic not, here we share a few tried and tested hacks to keep you focused and stay on track.

Mindset

View this challenge not as giving up something (in this case alcohol), focus on the gains: more time, more energy, sharper decision-making, deeper presence with loved ones, and overall a better sense of well-being. Don´t let negative self-talk get in the way. Self-trust is key here!

Have a Game Plan

Planning ahead reduces reliance on willpower and lets you anticipate obstacles. Tell trusted friends or family about your goal, they can cheer you on and keep you accountable. You don´t have to turn down invitations simply be 2 steps ahead. At social events have polite responses ready to any objections from drinking buddies, like “I’m doing Dry January for my health, thanks anyway!” and check out the drinks menu in advance so you even know what you´re going to drink.

Know your Triggers

Emotions like stress, boredom, or even celebration often trigger us to reach for alcohol as a quick “soother” or reward. Identify your personal triggers: What specific situations, feelings, or times of day spark that craving? Take a moment to journal them if you can, awareness gives you power.

Out with the Old & In with the New (habits)

Intentionally replace those old drinking rituals with new ones that deliver genuine joy and relaxation. When emotions run high find your new soother:

  • Take an invigorating walk in nature.
  • Exercise to feel that natural endorphin boost.
  • Call a friend, read a great book, pick up a new hobby.
  • Try out non-alcoholic alternatives for the ritual.
  • Anything that lights you up!

Track your progress

Journaling daily is a powerful, holistic tool to navigate the month and reflect later.

Ask yourself:

  • How am I feeling physically and emotionally?
  • Did I notice more energy, better sleep, or a morning glow?
  • Was I more present with friends/loved ones? More patient?
  • Did I start something new, reconnect with an old friend, or make exciting future plans
  • How has clarity and creativity shown up?

Find those glimmers and celebrate the small wins!

Removing alcohol often brings better sleep, sharper focus, weight loss, lower anxiety, and unleashed creativity. By month’s end you might feel so amazing that this alcohol-free version of you becomes the new normal!

You’ve got this so here’s to a vibrant, empowered start to the year and beyond!
